Kamsi – Introduction

I’m starting a mini-series based on a young lady Kamsi. Kamsi is a young, fresh graduate fighting her way in the labour market, experiencing new things, evolving as a woman. I’m still undecided if Kamsi should be weekly or monthly but for now, I’m super excited to introduce her and want you to partake in her journey.

I’m Kamsi. Kamsi Ani. A twenty-two-year-old fresh graduate and a literally blind girl who depends on her glasses for sight. I studied English. Although I’ve always thought of myself as a newscaster, telling people about major happenings and looking fabulous on screen. So you can imagine my disappointment when I got admitted to study a language course. I seriously look back and wonder how I passed my exams.

Unfortunately for me, I happen to be the last child of my parents having the worst, judgemental and competitive siblings in the world. It goes like this in my house “You had an A? I have A+! You are obviously not putting in much work.” I don’t hate them, I’m just not necessarily happy being their sister and I’m a bit jealous of their overrated accomplishments. And for the record, they are two older sisters. Most times, I blame the age difference. Adora the first is ten years older and Cheta the second is seven years older. I often reminded that I was not planned.

I’m always mistaken for a nerd because of my glasses but a smaller sized glass would look ridiculous on my round face. I’m outspoken, very argumentative and a bit fashionable… Well, I think I’m fashionable. What I’m trying to point out is that I’m not a nerd.

I graduated from the University of Lagos, I just finished my youth service teaching in a secondary school in Owo, Ondo state. Basically, my life right now is looking for a job, writing wonderful résumés, being an unpaid help for my parents and entertaining their daughters and grandchild every Sunday. I know, my life is extraordinarily perfect.

I'm OnyinyeOlufunmi, a visual artist, writer and psychologist from Lagos, Nigeria.
